July 13 – 2nd Street Market – one of Dayton’s most popular places to dine and socialize – will welcome traders old and new again when indoor shopping returns this weekend.

The market, located at 600 E. Second St. in Dayton, will reopen its indoor area on Saturday, July 17th, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

Housed in a historic freight house, the narrow aisles of the market and the crowds of visitors prohibit social distancing and the space has been closed since March 2020.

A lively outdoor market and special winter drive-thru pick-up events have filled the gaps in the past 16 months.

“I think people are happy to have that community atmosphere again,” said Lynda Suda, market manager.

When the indoor market reopens on Saturday morning, visitors will be greeted by many long-standing favorites, including Azra’s Mediterranean cuisine, Napale’s Mexican street food, Cheeky Meat Pies, and Caffeine Carl.

There will be some changes too. A handful of grocery vendors have retired and some new faces will remain, including Eze Foods, a company that makes sauces inspired by a grandmother’s recipes from Ghana.

“We want everyone to know that there are going to be exciting and wonderful dealers,” said Suda. “But if the last year has taught us anything, it’s change we can count on.”

Live music won’t return right away to spread the indoor seating further apart. Hand sanitizer will be provided and signs directing the unvaccinated to wear masks.

There will continue to be a large number of field services on the north side of the building. New grocery sellers, artisans and an array of fresh produce will be on site.

“It’s the height of the farmers market season, so there will be an abundance of products in the next few months,” said Suda.

The market will gradually add days and hours as the season progresses. Before the pandemic, the opening times changed, it was also open on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

The market works with Homefull, a nonprofit that works to end homelessness, and accepts SNAP and EBT.
