Sushi has become known as something that can be transformed into an entirely new dish using the same ingredients. From the sushi burrito to the sushi pizza to the classic sushi bowl, there are many different ways to combine all of our favorite sushi ingredients for a palate full of deliciousness. Now we have something new to add to the list of different ways to prepare sushi, and it’s definitely something you’ve seen all over your feed.

That Bake sushi The trend is taking TikTok by storm with countless recipes popping up. Everyone wants to share their variation of the dish and every single one of them is delicious and enticing. It’s a dish that’s been around for a while but has been catching on on social media lately, and for the most part no one seems disappointed with the end product. Just check out this recipe from TikToker and recipe creator @gaming_foodie, who listens to Alissa, that went viral just last month. The end product is crispy and flavorful and everything you want in a giant bite of sushi.

Why is it called “sushi casserole”?

First, let’s start with what sushi is: a Japanese dish consisting primarily of rice, usually raw seafood, and vegetables like avocado and cucumber. Some of the most popular sushi rolls include the California roll, which is kani sushi (meaning it contains imitation crab), spicy tuna, salmon rolls, or a rainbow roll, which consists of crab, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and snapper.

A sushi casserole takes two popular types of seafood used in sushi — crab and salmon — and mixes the two together to create something resembling a California roll. What makes a sushi casserole so different from your regular rolls is the fact that it’s prepared in a casserole dish and, as the name suggests, baked in the oven. What sets it apart from other sushi variations is the fact that all the ingredients are layered on top of each other and then cooked while most of the sushi is left raw. The hot dish is a little change from the regular sushi rolls, bowls and burritos you’d find in a restaurant, and that’s what we’re here for!

How to make a sushi casserole

While the videos you see on your FYP may seem a little intimidating, the actual court execution is nothing to fear. It’s actually a fairly simple dish with very few ingredients. And who doesn’t love a meal that you just pop in the oven and don’t have to worry about for a few minutes? We definitely do.

  1. Start cooking your rice. You can even do this ahead of time (or buy already cooked sushi rice at a restaurant) and mix the cooked rice with rice vinegar and set aside.
  2. Then you want to season your salmon. We recommend some garlic powder, paprika powder, salt and pepper.
  3. Then cook the fish however you like: in the oven, lightly seared in a pan or even in an air fryer.
  4. Once that is done, shred your salmon and faux crab together and add cream cheese, Japanese mayonnaise and sriracha.
  5. Start layering your casserole dish with the rice as the bottom layer, then the shredded seaweed or furikake, and finally the seafood mix.

How long does it take to bake a sushi casserole?

You want to bake your sushi casserole in the oven at 380 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes. Ideally you’re looking for some crunch on the top to let you know it’s done.

Then remove from the oven, top up with more sriracha and spicy mayo (or one or the other if you don’t do well with spicy), add a few spring onions and you’re done!

The final product is best eaten with seaweed, cucumber, and avocado to add extra texture and flavor to each bite. Feel free to add other toppings you like to your sushi!
