SIAD Macchine Impianti – SIAD MI, the engineering company of the SIAD group, has opened in the port of Ravenna a. installed and commissioned Reliquefaction system for the vaporized natural gas (Boil-off Gas – BOG) serving the Small Scale LNG (SSLNG) and four cryogenic compression packages (BOG compressors) for the recovery and reliquefaction of vaporized natural gas.
The installation is in a The latest generation of LNG storage owned by Depositi Italiani GNL – DIG (in German: Italian LNG Depot), a joint company of the PIR group (Petrolifera Italo Rumena), Edison, who is responsible for the technical implementation of the project, and Enagás (via its subsidiary Scale gas).
The camp consists of two atmospheric storage tanks for liquefied natural gas (LNG). Edison uses LNG carriers to transport the LNG to Ravenna, reload it and store it in the depot’s tanks and prepare it for bunkering or load it by tanker and distribute it to the filling stations on the mainland.
The warehouse has a Capacity of 20,000 cubic meters. With a potential annual turnover of more than 1 million cubic meters of LNG, it can refuel up to 12,000 trucks and up to 48 ferries per year, making it a strategic point for refueling liquefied natural gas throughout the northern Adriatic for maritime transport and for the Central North for the Land transport. This is a fundamental investment in make the transport sector more sustainable. Using methane as a fuel can reduce emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter to zero, with carbon dioxide emissions reduced by 20% compared to conventional fuels.
In this context, SIAD MI was compressing and reliquefying the BOG. involved. In fact, liquid methane partially vaporizes during the various transfer processes (from the LNG tanker and during distribution), changing from the liquid to the gaseous state, namely the BOG, which is first compressed and then liquefied again to be returned to the storage tanks.
The reliquefaction plant developed by SIAD Macchine Impianti enables the treatment of 1,100 kg of methane per hour, for a total of around 26 tons of recondensed gas per day and thus enables the use of LNG stocks significant long-term savings. In addition, the green footprint that characterizes the plant is of particular importance: the use of methane saves an estimated 6 million tonnes of CO2 over the life cycle of the plant compared to the use of other fuels.
SIAD Macchine Impianti was also designed and supplied four BOG compressors, which are oil free and with ATEX certification for installation in potentially explosive areas. Of these four compressors, two will work in the service of the facility for the reliquefaction of the vaporized gas and the other two will be involved in controlling the gas vaporization during the LNG transfer from the LNG tanker to the storage facility.
In order to achieve the ambitious goals of this plan, Depositi Italiani GNL has chosen the SIAD group As a reliable partner for a 100% Made in Italy project, starting with the parent company SIAD with its national award in the field of technology and gas management, which supplies the nitrogen. The reputation of SIAD MI for the Creation of bespoke projects combines engineering experience with an approach based on developing solutions specifically tailored to the needs of its customers. This leads to a system characterized by a high degree of modularity. Pre-assembled and assembled on modules, it guarantees quick installation and confirms the operational efficiency of SIAD MI.
The planning and construction work of the facility by SIAD MI began in August 2019 and were completed in 11 months, perfectly in line with the design requirements that were met and complied with despite the restrictions due to the health situation in 2020. The work of SIAD MI did not end with the delivery, installation, testing and commissioning of the plant and the compressors, but also continued with the operation and remote monitoring of the plant with the most modern technology systems.
From August 2021, an LNG tanker will fill the facility with liquefied natural gas, which enabled the tuning activities to be carried out. The plant was put into operation in October. SIAD Macchine Impianti will continue its commitment to LNG storage and the maintenance and Performance evaluation of the BOG compressors and the reliquefaction system, whereby a. is consolidated lasting partnership with the Depositi Italiani GNL and contributes to the sustainability of sea and land transport in the Adriatic region.
