From Broome County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension:

BINGHAMTON, NY – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County (CCE-BC) is launching an exciting new program for teens ages 12-16 this summer. Teen World Cuisine: A cooking program around the world is a 6-week program that aims to promote healthy eating and more physical activity in local teenagers while they explore the cuisines of Thailand, Greece, France, Brazil, China, and Mexico.

Teens learn how to eat a balanced diet, cut back on sugar-sweetened beverages and reduce unhealthy fats, as well as the importance of a nutritious breakfast and preparing healthy snacks. Participants take part in weekly exercises that demonstrate inexpensive and effective methods of strengthening muscles and building strong bones. CCE-BC’s nutrition educators have years of experience helping teenagers make the right nutritional choices now that will have a positive impact on their future.

Youngsters are each given a “passport” to stamp each country they visit in addition to aprons, basic kitchen utensils, and a kit for back-to-school after graduation. They learn about food safety and basic cooking techniques to assist their guardians in the kitchen or to expand their own knowledge of food preparation.

Teen World Cuisine takes place at two locations on different days. On Tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm at Housing Connections on Virgil Street in Binghamton and Mondays from 3pm to 5pm at the Lee Barta Center on Liberty Street in Binghamton.
