House of the Dragon: Complete Guide to Filming Locations


From Northern Ireland and Iceland to Malta and Croatia, the incredible filming locations that brought the Seven Kingdoms to life in Game of Thrones have become tourist hotspots.

So it’s safe to say that fantasy fans are excited to see what epic settings will be featured in the prequel series. house of the dragon – coming to Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK and HBO in the US later this month.

HBO previously confirmed that the main production headquarters for the 10-episode series was Warner Bros Leavesden Studios in Watford, England, where the interior was built and filmed.

Indeed, in what has been described as a “groundbreaking” piece of technology LED video stage is designed to add backgrounds to scenes in real time.

However, fans needn’t worry about not seeing otherworldly locations in the show, as filming locations for House of the Dragon include historical and medieval cities in Spain and Portugal, as well as various locations in England, such as: B. sweeping beaches in Cornwall and villages in the Peak District of Derbyshire.

Caceres and Trujillo, Spain

HBO returned to Cáceres, Spain, to film scenes for House of The Dragon, having previously used the filming location in Game of Thrones (it represented the Lannister fortress of King’s Landing in Season 7, according to YahooUK).

The old town of Cáceres in the western region of Extremadura is listed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site UNESCO as a mixture of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance styles.

Various locations in the historic city were used extensively to depict the streets of King’s Landing in House of the Dragon.

According to Spanish newspaper Hoy, the medieval town of Trujillo, 45 km east of Cáceres, was also used for filming. It was also previously used in Season 7 of Game of Thrones. Photos shared to a House of the Dragons fan account on Twitter showed Targaryen soldiers in the background while the set was being set up.

Monsanto and Penha Garcia, Portugal

Filming took place in the unique, historic village of Monsanto, Portugal. Also known as the City of Stones, Monsanto has been voted “the most Portuguese village in Portugal”. The hilltop location features gigantic boulders and a medieval castle that now lies in ruins.

A nearby castle in Penha Garcia, which offers stunning views and a picturesque village below, was also used for filming, according to the film Portugal Film Commission.

Cornwall, Surrey and Derbyshire, England

Filming took place across Cornwall in the South West of England including Holywell Bay Beach, a classic North Cornwall beach and National Trust grounds which were used for stunning location shoots.

living in Cornwall reports that Holywell Bay is “a peaceful beach overlooking breathtaking vistas such as the famous Gull Rocks”. The area is known as Poldark’s Beach as it featured so heavily in BBC drama.

In 2021, actors Matt Smith, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, and Emma D’Arcy, who plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, were spotted filming there. In the first look images promoting the House of Dragons (top of this page), the scenic sandy beach is featured as the epic backdrop to the shot.

Other filming locations in Cornwall include Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula; and the tidal island of St. Michael’s Mount, believed to represent Driftmark, the ancestral home of House Velaryon.

Corresponding HampshireLiveFilming also took place at Caesar’s Camp, a hilltop fortress on the border between the counties of Surrey and Hampshire. In September 2021, a large set with a number of tents was set up between the trees at the Aldershot site. An image shared on social media from filming showed the Targaryen sigil banner outside one of the tents.

In the same month that BBC reported that Matt Smith was spotted filming the series in the village of Castleton in the Peak District, Derbyshire. Filming locations are said to include Cave Dale, Eldon Hill Quarry and the market square.
