Dolly Parton says she’s a good cook, but she never sticks to a recipe. She shared that she has generally always avoided prescriptions. Parton justified the non-prescription approach to cooking and shared her favorite ingredients for cooking.

Dolly Parton is delighted to be collaborating with Duncan Hines to bring out cake mixes

In 2022, Parton and Duncan Hines will launch a Southern-inspired line of cake mixes. These include mixes for banana and coconut cakes, creamy buttercream frosting, and chocolate buttercream frosting. She shared that she was excited to be working with the brand.

“I just love Duncan Hines and have cooked with them for years,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I can cook almost anything from scratch, but why would you when you have all these great recipes ready? All you have to do is read the directions and you have these gorgeous cakes.”

She is particularly fond of the banana cake mix because it triggers a certain level of nostalgia for her.

“Nothing beats Southern [recipes] and certainly nobody has ever made a better banana pudding than my own mother,” she said. “I can make a really good banana pudding myself. We thought it would be great to have something that lasted a little longer and was easier to make, so we started with a banana pudding cake.”

She shared that she usually never sticks to recipes

While Parton enjoys cooking, she says she avoids using any recipes.

“I’ve never normally followed a recipe in my life,” she said. “I’m a good southern cook and people in the mountains and in the south in general don’t follow recipes.”

However, with some family recipes, it is important for her to follow some kind of guide.

“Obviously with certain things like old family recipes, you have to make sure you’re doing it right, so you might have to do that,” she said. “You learn over generations how different people cook and you give your own little special touches to what I do. But it’s very rare that I ever use a recipe because I’ve seen it enough, know it enough and have a natural instinct for good tasting food.”

Parton shared that it takes her days to plan a menu when friends or family come over.

“I love to make a really good roast pork, and then you have to do all your sauces and your veggies and all that,” she said. “And then maybe rolls or cornbread or both. It’s time-consuming, and any chef will tell you that, especially if you want to make a big deal out of it. Then there is dessert. So it’s an all day deal to have a really great meal.”

Dolly Parton published a cookbook

Although Parton doesn’t use any recipes herself, she has published a cookbook for anyone wanting to make their family recipes. The book includes classic recipes like banana pudding, chicken and dumplings, and stone soup.

“I still like to try new foods as often as possible,” she said on her official website. “But when it comes to cooking for me and my husband Carl and my large extended family, which now numbers several hundred, we really want to eat what comforts us the most: good, hearty food that’s rooted in Mom’s kitchen, this one.” Country meetings of my childhood.”
