New fast food restaurant in the Sault

Restaurant owners Jay and Ketan Patel put the finishing touches on the latest takeout option at Sault.

The two friends are happy to introduce Prairie Donair, a fast food chain with a wide variety of Middle Eastern dishes.

There are several facilities across the country, but the future Second Line West location will be Ontario’s first.

The menu offers a variety of healthy and nutritious options, from falafel and shawarma to platters and salads. Vegan items are also available.

Co-owner Jay Patel says they hope to have the restaurant up and running by the end of the month.

“It’s very exciting,” he says. “A lot of people are contacting us and they’re really excited to try it. We’re pretty much ready to go.”

The Patels moved to Sault in December 2019 and have since run Fat Bastard Burrito at Churchill Plaza.

Jay Patel says they tried to open Prairie Donair last year but the pandemic halted their plans. Despite the delay, Patel reckons the restaurant could be a popular choice with locals when it opens in late May.

“It’s a good business opportunity,” he says. Northern Ontario restaurants are growing. It’s also nice that we are connected to the US border. We think we can grow the business here.”

Prairie Donair will offer dine-in and take-out, and delivery will also be available through multiple mobile apps including Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats and Door Dash.

And what is a Donair?

It’s a type of sandwich or wrap that originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The meat consists of seasoned beef or lamb that is roasted on a spit and then cut into thin strips.
