Of the exhaustion of European wars of aggression | columnists

Why have the European powers in world history since 1853 been the most warmongering and civilian murdering people on the planet – and that’s nowhere near the case?

Before you answer today’s thesis question, you should know that if you’re European or of European descent, don’t get too deep into your feelings as this blog is purely analytical and not emotional. An important part of this analysis is that the author, Ol’ Hobbs, is well aware that nations in Asia have waged wars of aggression (Japan and China terrorized Asia and the Pacific in the 20th century); Africa (the battles in Rwanda were appallingly brutal) and America (blatant US imperialism in Cuba, Haiti and Mexico, along with covert US operations in Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Grenada spring to mind).

But on the last point, lest we forget that among the precursors to US wars of aggression since the 1850s, 27 of the 28 American presidents during that period (from “Buck” Buchanan to Barack Obama) were of European descent – and students of old war realpolitik – and colonial expansionism.

Which in turn makes me wonder why exactly the continent (Europe) developed the highly racist (and suspect) concept of Aryan moral superiority through its famous philosophers like John Locke in Britain, Jean-Jacques Rousseau in France and Immanuel Kant in Germany; or the pseudoscience of Aryan “intellectual superiority” by the eugenics movement of the late 19th and 20th centuries, which claimed that white brains were larger and more effective than any other people in the world, why did these supposedly smarter and more moral people focus for conquest, violence, murder and chaos, all in the name of the crown, the country and white supremacy?

God only knows, but keeping the continental kill tally:

*The Crimean War, which began in 1853, left almost 500,000 British, French, Crimean, Ukrainian, Russian, Poles and Ottoman Turks dead before the war ended in 1856…

*The Franco-Prussian War (also known as the Franco-Prussian War) that began in 1870 resulted in nearly two million casualties, with over 200,000 French and Prussian (German) soldiers dying before the war ended in 1871…

*The First World War, which began in 1914, claimed over 40 million victims before the end of the war, including around 22 million deaths among German, British, French, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, Italian, Ottoman-Turkish and American soldiers and civilians in 1918…

*The Russian Civil War, which began in 1917, resulted in almost eight million deaths among the Red Army, White Army, US Army and civilians before the end of the war in 1919…

The Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, resulted in over 500,000 deaths in the Iberian Peninsula as Fascist and Republican forces clashed in what was essentially a proxy battle between Nazi Germany and the West before the war ended in 1939…

*World War II, which began in 1939, resulted in an estimated 85 million combat and civilian deaths before the end of the war in 1945. (Not included in this tally, but crucial to the analysis of this essay, are the more than 10 million Jews, Roma, and infirm civilians murdered during the Nazi German Holocaust).

The Soviet-Afghan war that began in 1979 resulted in more than two million military and civilian deaths before the end of the war in 1989.

The Soviet Army was thoroughly defeated by the mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Less than 20 years later, the same weapons that the US provided to the mujahideen to fight the Soviets were used against US forces invading after the 9/11 terrorist attacks…

The Balkan Wars, which began in 1992, led to the deaths of over 100,000 Bosnians, Serbs and Croats before the war ended in 1995…

Aftermath of a skirmish in Croatia in the 1990s…

Thus, a conservative estimate shows that European wars of aggression have resulted in the deaths of almost 150 million people since 1853! This number includes the above mentioned 10 million Jews and Roma killed during Hitler’s Aryan domination Holocaust, but I would be remiss if I did not add that Belgium’s King Leopold II was responsible for the deaths of approximately 10 million blacks in the same Period responsible was colonized Congo.

Nor should we forget the hundreds of thousands of Blacks killed by the British Empire (and Cecil Rhodes’ DeBeers Diamond Mining Company) in South Africa, or the untold millions of Blacks and Native Americans killed by European slavers and colonizers from Britain and France were killed Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain.

Ironically, in 1945, Soviet Red Army soldiers liberated the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, where over two million Jews were murdered by Nazi thugs

With these very highlights (or low lights, if you will) of Europe’s lust for territorial acquisitions and dominance over natural resources and human capital, it’s no wonder Vladimir Putin, a former KGB colonel and student of modern European history, didn’t hesitate , it annexing oil-rich Crimea in 2014 — or furthering its goals for territorial expansion into the rest of Ukraine this year, all under the guise of “Russian security.”

A Ukrainian man walks through the rubble of a Russian military shelling on an apartment complex in Kyiv…

But unless history proves otherwise, there is no such thing as “security” when European politicians or their American, Canadian, and even Australian cousins put everyone in colonizer mode. You see, while it’s true that Vladimir Putin is a money-hungry, bloodthirsty tyrant, one could certainly argue that our own former President, George W. Bush, was no better when he started wars in Iraq and Afghanistan no direct responses to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 – and left hundreds of thousands of military and civilian lives in the ensuing 20 years of fighting!

One could also credibly argue that in 1991 Bush’s father, George Herbert Walker Bush, was more interested in protecting American oil interests than “protection of self-determination rights” of the Kuwaiti people during his clash with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein that claimed nearly 200,000 military and civilian lives that year.

Which leads to my conclusion: One of the worst inflections of global white supremacy, often done under the guise of promoting the best interests of a particular European (or European-descendant-led) nation, is the reality that billions of people are at risk to die because of the Europeans’ (historical and modern) desire to dominate and control their neighbors – and the world that is writ large. A reality that makes me gnash my teeth every time I turn on the news and see how the possibility of global nuclear war could emanate from Putin’s recent invasion of Ukraine – and how our lives could be in jeopardy through no fault of our own…
