Italian Ambassador HE Alessandro Prunas said that the positive trend in bilateral relations between Italy and Qatar had maintained an excellent level in recent years, noting that the excellent status of relations between Italy and Qatar was also in Afghanistan this summer had shown its real dimensions crisis in which Qatar has proven to be an important and reliable partner.
Speaking to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the occasion of the national holiday of Qatar, he said that the Italian security forces regularly conduct joint training and exchanges, which are increasing in view of the 2022 World Cup. He noted that next year will not only be the year of an historic and unforgettable FIFA World Cup, but also a remarkable year for Qatari-Italian relations.
Regarding the economy, the ambassador said that COVID-19 is having a serious negative impact on the global economy. He cited the interruption of international supply chains and declines in employment and development as the immediate effects of the pandemic. He expressed his conviction that both Italy and Qatar responded promptly with successful economic and medical strategies, such as heavy public investment in innovation and sustainable development or, most importantly, a strong reliance on science to bolster their respective vaccination campaigns. He stressed that these efforts resulted in Italy becoming the leading country in Europe in terms of GDP growth, with Qatar’s GDP expected to grow 4.50 percent in 2022.
Regarding the 2022 World Cup, he said Qatar’s preparations for hosting the event were unprecedented in history; Not only is the tournament taking place in the Middle East and the Arab world for the first time, but it is also the first World Cup to be held entirely in a contiguous metropolitan region. He said that Qatar has developed world class hospitality capacity along with extremely efficient infrastructures and beautiful stadiums to make this possible.
He added that the Italians are proud of the contribution they have made to this endeavor through a number of Italian companies that have worked on projects such as the Doha Metro and Al Bayt Stadium, which was created by a joint venture between Italian and Qatari company was built.
“Al Bayt is indeed the tournament’s most iconic stadium, shaped like a traditional tent, and audiences have already admired its beauty during the FIFA Arab Cup. I have no doubt that the coming year will offer many other opportunities for cooperation and Italy is ready to do its part to make the FIFA World Cup ™ a success, ”he said.
The Ambassador congratulated Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the Qatari people on starting the event and hosting the very first Shura elections.
