Ultracomida in Aberystwyth has announced that it has converted the restaurant section of its Pier Street deli into an expanded wine store.
The Spanish food importer Ultracomida has also expanded its wine retail offering – with investments in a new publicly accessible warehouse in the Glan yr Afon Industrial Estate.
The 4,500 square foot warehouse is now open to the public and has up to 15 bottles of wine for tasting at any time; Wholesale customers can also sign up for guided tastings.
It has now invested £ 49,000 to turn the Pier Street shop and restaurant into one of the largest collections of Spanish wines on Welsh High Street.
While 50 percent of the sales area was previously reserved for sit-in customers, the renovation offers space to expand the variety of wines by up to 30 percent with the possibility of expanding the range in the near future.
While Ultracomida co-founders Paul Grimwood and Shumana Palit say they had to adjust to the constant challenges of last year, they believe the demand for quality Spanish wines will remain constant for the months and years to come.
Paul stated, “We have seen our online wine sales increase by more than 50 percent over the past year as people want to drink better, more interesting wines at home.
“Our new website, Spanish Wines Direct, really makes the most of our impressive range of vermouths, sherries and wines from Montilla-Moriles, which we have expanded enormously over the course of 2020.
“We have also used the past few months to focus on our connections with winemakers who have challenged themselves to find new ways to revive traditional grapes and use gentle farming methods. We look forward to sharing all of this with our customers. “
Shumana continued, “It feels strange to us to focus so much on retail as we love the hospitality industry, but we are all doing our best to adapt to the current climate.
“We were a little nervous about introducing the Aberystwyth renovation to our locals and regulars, but luckily they are loving it.
“We can already imagine hosting tastings with a glass of wine and a plate of cheese – which we can look forward to in the not too distant future.”
