AUSTIN, TEXAS – Whole Foods Market, a business unit of Amazon.com Inc., has released its 10 Trends for 2022 and sees plant-based foods, sustainability and functional ingredients thriving in the coming year. The trends were developed by the retailer’s Trends Council, a group of more than 50 shoppers and other trend watchers, and represent their insights into emerging consumer preferences.
“Over the past year, we’ve seen tremendous pandemic changes in grocery shopping habits as the world got used to spending more time at home,” said Sonya Gafsi Oblisk, chief marketing officer at Whole Foods Market. âAs the food industry slowly adapts to a new normal, we expect consumers to prioritize foods and beverages that offer additional benefits – such as functional sodas and tonics – and products that support their wellbeing, such as foliage and urban garden products agricultural practices that help improve soil health. “
Whole Foods # 1 Trend Prediction for 2022 is that indoor farming, what the retailer calls âultra-urban farming,â will take off, with products made using indoor farming techniques such as hydroponics and aquaponics trending. Current products on the market to keep up with this trend include Gotham Green Lettuce, AeroFarms Micro-Broccoli and Upward Farms Organic Microgreen Mixes.
Yuzu flavor could also shine in the coming year and is number 2 on the Whole Foods list according to the Trends Council. The citrus fruits are mainly produced in China, Japan and South Korea and have a tart and sour taste. It is formulated into a range of retail products including hard seltzer, mayonnaises, and vinaigrettes. Food service operators give soups, vegetables, noodles and fish a yuzu flavor.
The Whole Foods Market predicts that in 2022 more consumers will try âreduceatarianism,â which is about choosing animal products with sustainable properties. These attributes can include that the products come from animals that have been grass-fed or pastured, or the animals that have been produced under organic certification.
Another trend that is trending is hibiscus. The sweet and tart taste is evident in teas, fruit spreads, and yogurts, and consumers may continue to gravitate towards the ingredient for its taste, vitamin C content, and pink color.
At the Whole Foods Market, many consumers, especially Millennials and Gen-Z, will cut their alcohol consumption in the coming year. As a result, the retailer predicts that soft drinks will be trending as people try gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey alternatives.
Ingredients and flavors that round out the top 10 Whole Foods trends include grains that promote soil health, such as kernza, sunflower seeds, moringa, functional carbonated drinks, and turmeric. Each of the last five trends has a health component, regardless of whether it focuses on consumer interest in personal well-being or the health of the environment.
The 10 trends forecast for the Whole Foods Market in 2021 include greater consumer interest in health and wellness, premium breakfast options, diversification of center stores through innovations in pantry staples, coffee taste, more baby foods, upcycling, Edible oil innovation, kombuchas with alcohol, chickpeas and meatless snacks.
